Movin’ on Up

Over the past few weeks, Switzer Performance has been moving into a new facility on the East side of Oberlin, Ohio. The new Switzer shop, like Tym’s cars, is a massive upgrade over the original, with an obvious emphasis on the sort of “bigger, faster, more” thinking that has made Switzer Performance a standout in the automotive aftermarket.

We’ll be posting more about the new shop in the coming days. For now, check out the official press release, below.

This month, Switzer Performance - a low-volume, Oberlin-based builder of high-performance tuning packages for exotic cars - is moving into its new facility. That new Switzer shop, a massive 105,000 sq. ft. structure in Oberlin’s industrial park district, is one that Tym hopes will be up to the task of supporting the company’s growth for years to come.

“It got a little crowded in there,” is how Tym Switzer, owner of Switzer Performance calmly described the garage that’s been the company’s home for the last several years. To hear Tym describe it, you might think the facility could use another bay. Or, perhaps, a few extra parking spaces outside. Being the type of person Tym is, though - the type of person who regularly drives thousand horsepower, hand-built exotic cars at speeds that would leave the average passenger a snotty, whimpering mess - you have to expect more than the usual bit of understatement. At just 4500 sq. ft., Switzer’s HWY 20 facility had become a model of space-efficiency, fitting a fabrication area, sales offices, parts storage, shop space, and even a climate-controlled “clean room” for the company’s award-winning engine program. Despite the efficiency, it was time for the small-volume car builder to seek roomier pastures. “We outgrew the space two years ago, plain and simple. It was time for us to expand.”

“It was time for us to expand.”

Expand they did! Approximately 60,000 sq. ft. of the new complex have been separated specifically for “Switzer Performance Innovation” the high-performance tuning house, while other sections have been dedicated to associated companies like Syvecs North America, Switzer Racing Engines, and the newly-formed “Switzer Cars”.

Even with “just” 60,000 sq. ft., the new Switzer shop is more than thirteen times larger than their previous facility, which will allow the company to finish more customer cars and continue to expand. Switzer believes this will benefit everyone involved. “The economy tanked for everyone in 2008, but we’ve still managed to grow every year,” explains Tym, “that is 100% due to our clients. 90% of our new business comes from word-of-mouth referrals, and we don’t really have any advertising presence. We owe our customers, we’re grateful to them, and with the benefits we’ll receive from having the new space, we’ll be able to service our customer base better and faster. They’ll spend less time waiting and, hopefully, they’ll be even happier.”
